I expect Water to be most difficult of the four to play effectively, especially in a two player game. But we'll see...
Water magics:
1 Tide: costs 2 MP, does 1 damage to 10 squares in chosen corner (for example squares A1-4,B1-3,C1-2,D1 are the SW corner)
So this hits corner up to the diagonal row between fourth squares on sides. You choose corner SW/NW/NE/SE.
(Tide is practically useless in two player game because I'll just avoid those areas.)
2 Flush: costs 3 MP, does 4 damage to four center squares (D-E4-5)
3 Flood: costs 9 MP, does 4 damage to 21 squares in chosen corner (similarly to Tide, only two diagonal rows further)
So this hits corner up to the diagonal row between sixth squares on sides.
4 Ice Storm: costs 13 MP, does 5 damage to all white squares
5 Sail: costs 3 MP, moves player to any square on edge of board (lines A,H,1,8); can only be used when in that area
Sail (like Air's Fly) is a dodging trick that allows you to travel to anywhere on edge of board. It also leaves you couple MP if you don't use other magic that turn. Remember that you can't move normally on the turn when you use Sail, and you can only use it when you already are on edge squares (meaning Water player should generally stay on the edge, except to do the unexpected - though when an opponent has Earth that would make you easy target for Rolling Stone).
I believe Water fits your playing style because it requires you to save all magic often (as only when you have 9MP for Flood you can hit any square on board, otherwise I can keep safely on squares that other Water magics can't hit).
My Air magics:
1 Lightning: costs 1 MP, does 4 damage to chosen square
2 Tornado: costs 4 MP, does 3 damage to chosen 3X3 area
3 Hurricane: costs 13 MP, does 5 damage to chosen 5X5 area
4 Thunder Storm: costs 18 MP, does 7 damage to chosen 7X7 area
5 Fly: costs 4 MP, player may choose any square to move into
These may seem powerful - and against Fire, the one type that has no movement magic, they are - but the big ones are costly and using Fly doesn't save MP fast.
I just realized this game has the problem that you have to check elsewhere which are white and which black squares on chess board...

Note: the idea of Flush is that it hits the 4 squares in center that you can't reach with Tide or Flood.
Essentially this means it's logical for me to stay in center area and you have (sort of) 20% chance that you hit me with Flush or one of Floods (NW/SW/NE/SE) - except that since Flush is so much cheaper for you to play, I should mainly stay in Flood areas...
I have to admit Water isn't very interesting to play in two player game. Though we are now playing with couple rules removed, with the Black/White Magic Storm magic in use it would have more options.
