Re: Gladiator Arena/Wild West Arena/Naval Arena: design and chat

The idea is that each player makes own thread and - with honor system - only reads their own and the game topic. Except me (running the game) and I - again, with honor system - decide my own moves before looking others'.
BUT, when there is only one forum player (here You), there's no need for a separate topic, you can just post in the game thread.

You don't need to make a board, I make one showing everyone's positions after moving that turn (in the game topic) and next to it tell everyone's moves, shots, hits that turn and how much damage each player has.
All you post is moves (like LLL to move 3 left or LTU for left-turn-up) and the square you shoot (D4, F6 etc.)
Except in the first ("zero") turn (=game start) you post the starting position of your ship (D4-6, E-G5 etc.)

There's no thread hiding at the moment, for as long as it's just us, PR, OW... testing the games, we can assume nobody cheats. emoticon

As it seems it's just you and me, I'm going to do what I've for years done to have another player in my F1 game: I'm making my mother play.

So just to get one some kind of game started, we'll have a three player, you, me and mom (on my games under the name Simelius).

Game starts once post your starting position in NA Game 1.

A general rule: if you post an illegal move - out of board, moving up when horizontal etc. - I will ignore it (that part of your move). You don't really lose anything on that; not moving is as much a surprise element as unusual move.

That's it, Game 1 of Naval Arena over and I won.
Took 9 turns (well actually 10 including the opening zero turn), so I had that estimated about right.

Now, Bec, I hate to complicate things just as you got the hang of NA, but I'd like to try Wild West Arena next.
As suitably simplified version it should be at least as easy and I think WWA is easier to play for someone who doesn't know what is doing (I mean if we get any new players, not referring to you emoticon ).

All the games work on same principles, it's (mostly) just movement and shooting rules that change.

So, who's up for a game, any of them?

I'll check it out but not tonight. Been painting in the sun all day and I am fried. I'll look at it in the morning and see if it makes sense. :)

Re: Gladiator Arena/Wild West Arena/Naval Arena: design and chat

Let me summarize the main differences between NA and WWA.
In WWA:
(note that I'm referring to the latest version of rules, which I'd like to use; though it may appear more complicated, I think it's actually easier)

1. you are in one square, opposed to NA's "ship"
2. you shoot to a direction (of 8, from where "you" are), instead of a square
(when diagonals are in use, I prefer to use N NE E SE S SW W NW)
3. you move (in one turn) only to one direction (like chess queen, but) one or two squares
(or player can choose to stay put)
4. there are 5 weapons; each player chooses one in beginning of game
(knife and pistols are slightly more complicated to use than rifle, shotgun or Gatling; we might exclude knife and pistols for first game or I could use one of those; I'd prefer everyone to use a different weapon for first test game)
5. the score count goes the other way round, down from 10 life points (or we can have less for shorter game, but the weapon balance is for 10)

So in WWA, your move would look like this: 2W S or 1SW NE
for moving two to west and shooting south or one to southwest and shooting northeast
(I would prefer players to use "1SW" instead of just "SW" to clearly separate that's meant as movement, even though I'll always assume first is moving and second shot.)

Anyways, at this point it's up to volunteer players (Bec, anyone else?) do try WWA, another game of NA Simple rules or perhaps NA with Advanced rules.
(Also, I have an idea for mixed rules for NA, basically advanced rules except ships can still be in same squares...)

Game 2 (WWA) about to start, anyone can still join...

I should write rules for WWA (or more like copy from GA) about situation that two players choose same starting square. I thought it wouldn't be much of problem (1/64 odds), but should resolve it anyway.

We haven't yet played the first original game, Gladiator Arena, nor the two more complicated rule versions of Naval arena and now I'm making yet another variant... emoticon

Coming soon: Magic Arena

(Edit: oooh boy, this one's going to be a beauty!
Now if only I had a few players for it...)

What I learned from the first test game of WWA:

- game is slightly longer than I expected
- it's more about luck than I expected; I guess all the games are, though GA (and the upcoming MA) least
- I really need to fix the "shotgun corner standoff" thing. I added to early rules the "stab" system, but it seemed too complicated and I removed it, making knife a weapon. But if the knife is not in play... I guess I'll just add a special rule that you're not allowed to enter corners when playing shotgun.

The big question is: what do we play next? And further, who will play?
Hands up anyone who wants to play emoticon

I'm thinking NA Mixed rules...

(Bec, the mixed rules version differs from the Simple only in two things:
1. you can move "over the edge", entering opposite side of board
2. there's three types of ships, 3, 5 and 7 square, with bigger ships having extra fire power; the 3-ship corvette is same as the Simple rules ship
Also Mixed version is played to 20 damage, due bigger ships with more fire power.)

Right now I'd really like another player. These games - particularly the played NA and WWA - are more fitting for 4+ players. And I'd like to see how easy or hard for me is to follow posts in more than one topic.
