Cosmic Conquest
This forum is to discuss the game design and mechanics for a Interstellar Game of exploration, conquest, and empire that I am creating... The working title for the game is "Cosmic Conquest."

Re: Cosmic Conquest
The design so far is setup to allow 8 players per game. The starting locations for each player is:
00
08
0G
80
8G
G0
G8
GG
I confess to manipulating the random star locations so that each starting location has 5 stars in reach with a players basic tech rating.

Re: Cosmic Conquest
Aren't corner and side starting positions unequal?
How about two per side, 0-5, 0-B, 5-0, B-0 etc. (or 4 and C)

Re: Cosmic Conquest
I suppose the potential inequality is there. It would have been very biased before I manipulated the random star seeding but Outside of quadrant 1 (NW and anchored at 88) I think the balance works out well in the star counts.
I am still playing around on star types because I am not sure about the balance on those yet. Once I get those finalized I can also look at what you suggest as well.
It might be even more fun if there were 16 viable starting points (combining Kaunisto's idea with my original idea) and let the players pick their actual starting location. That way the players could not be certain of where their opponents "home system" actually is at first.

Re: Cosmic Conquest
It took me three tries but the map now shows each of the player starting areas with five star systems reachable with a players base tech AND with two approaches into each starting area which eliminates the "fortress" single approach that some of the corner areas enjoyed in my first drafting of the map...

Re: Cosmic Conquest
I just tried my hand at making a "pretty map." It would be usable in the game but I think it will work better as a "game advertising" background graphic...

Re: Cosmic Conquest
Looking at scale the game map is a two dimensional representation of a cluster of stars set inside a area approximately 20 light years across. By way of comparison that area (if centered on our own sun) contains 83 stars while the game map contains 94 stars. The number of "G" and "K" type stars in the game map is skewed to reflect a much greater concentration of "earthlike planets" than what we see in our own stellar neighborhood.
