What is 'The Bible'
For myself the Bible is a record of God's message to Man and how Man has responded to God.
Yes, to hold this view you have to first believe that God exists and I do so that makes it easy for me.

Re: What is 'The Bible'
For me, the Bible is an interesting collection of ancient literature.
I'll leave it at that.

Re: What is 'The Bible'
Hi Lesigner Girl,
Welcome to "If..." even though the board is not officially open it's nice to see you here.
For me it is much more than that of course. The two main sections are the Old and New Testament's. I like to think of them like this:
Old Testament = The Promises and Nature of God and what mankind did with those promises.
New Testament = The Fulfillment of God's Promises and what mankind is doing with the choice given.
I know that is way to simplistic to base any real study on but it gives me a broad scope of things to aid in appreciating the various books.
Other people will use categories such as "Law," "History," "Poetry," etc etc and that's okay by me as well.

Re: What is 'The Bible'
If I had to go with law, history, or poetry, I'll go with poetry, although I do have my own ideas on why all that stuff was written. ;)

Re: What is 'The Bible'
Well, "If..." poetry is the category you have six choices, though most people will only mention five of them.
JOB
PSALMS
PROVERBS
ECCLESIASTES
THE SONG OF SOLOMON
LAMENTATIONS
Of those the only one most of us would call poetry is the last which is a set of five somewhat sad poems.
Psalms is what we would call songs though and a lot of songs do read like poetry though which is good.

Re: What is 'The Bible'
Song of Solomon actually gets a bit raunchy. For example, 2:3-2:6 says:
3 Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest
is my lover among the young men.
I delight to sit in his shade,
and his fruit is sweet to my taste.
4 He has taken me to the banquet hall,
and his banner over me is love.
5 Strengthen me with raisins,
refresh me with apples,
for I am faint with love.
6 His left arm is under my head,
and his right arm embraces me.
So, is Solomon the one who is tasting the "fruit" here, or is this from a woman's point of view?

Re: Song of Solomon
I would say this is a intimate moment instead of raunchy since the latter term implies something we would call "dirty."
This is the time before the couple's wedding, a period that can be as short as a single weekend or as long as six months when they are not supposed to be seeing each other. They are with family and friends during which the group shares stories about the bride or groom designed to strengthen and intensify the love the couple has for one another.
Meals are also shared and it is not out of bounds for them to send food and treats to each others Shabbat (our closest equivalent is the Bachelor and Bachelorette parties) to be shared.
The normal breakdown places this passage as from the Womans point of view
3 As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.
4 He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.
5 Stay me with flagons, comfort me with apples: for I am sick of love.
6 His left hand is under my head, and his right hand doth embrace me.
7 I charge you, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, by the roes, and by the hinds of the field, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please.

Re: What is 'The Bible'
It still sounds like a euphemism to me, particularly the 2nd half of the 3rd verse.
To some people, 'intimate' and 'raunchy' can describe the same thing.
